Water current and light condition for culturing Japanese spiny lobster (<i>Panulirus japonicus</i>) phyllosoma larvae using plankton-kreisels

<p>For the improvement in culture technology for larvae of the Japanese spiny lobster Panulirus japonicus, effects of current speed and light condition on the growth and survival of early-stage and middle-stage phyllosoma larvae were examined when they were cultured using plankton-kreisels (31 l). When newly-hatched and 154-day-old phyllosoma larvae, respectively, were cultured in the tanks under three conditions of current speeds (3-5, 6-7 and 8-9 cm/s near the bottom of tank) for one month, the survival rate significantly increased as the current speed increased. There was a trend that the body length at the terminal of the experiments became larger as the current speed increased, although the differences were not significant. In other experiments, newly-hatched and 47-day-old phyllosoma larvae were cultured at two light intensities of 1.3 and 2.2 μmol/m2/s at the middle of tank, they showed faster growth at 1.3 μmol/m2/s than at 2.2 μmol/m2/s. These results suggest that phyllosoma larvae of P. japonicus should be cultured under the conditions of faster current speed and reduced illumination, which can disperse larvae widely in a tank.</p>
