Description

[Purpose] We reported on the changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and axial length (AL) in children wearing hyperopic glasses.

[Subjects and Methods] Subjects were 16 eyes of 8 children wearing refractive glasses for hyperopia or hyperopic astigmatism to treat amblyopia or esotropia. All the subjects had received cycloplegic refraction with 1% atropine instillation twice a day for 7 days at the age of 3 and 6 years. At the same time, their SFCT was measured by optical coherence tomography and AL was measured with an optical biometer.

[Results] Spherical equivalents (mean ± standard deviation) were +3.76 ± 2.05 D at age 3 and +3.85 ± 2.26 D at age 6. The respective SFCT and AL measurements were 435 ± 43 μm (age 3) and 442 ± 55 μm (age 6), and 21.05 ± 0.58 mm (age 3) and 21.61 ± 0.65 mm (age 6). SFCT increased in 10 (63%) eyes and 9 (57%) of them also showed an increase in AL. However, a significant negative correlation was found between the change amounts in SFCT and AL.

[Conclusion] In the eyes of children undergoing hyperopia refractive correction, about half of the eyes showed an increase in SFCT and AL; and the greater the increase in SFCT, the smaller the increase in AL was. It is considered that refractive glasses for full correction of hyperopia might have removed hyperopic defocus and thus, the increase in AL was suppressed and SFCT increased.
