Description

The coefficient of thermal expansion of a carbon fiber in the longitudinal direction is relatively small, and is difficult to measure because of the “negative thermal expansion”, which means that the carbon fiber shrinks when heated around room temperature. In order to realize a simple and highly accurate evaluation, a measurement system that uses a trolley-type sample holder and a direct current heating method was developed. The thermal expansion of the fiber sample in the longitudinal and the diametral (transverse) directions was detected using a laser interferometer and an optical diffraction, respectively. The developed thermal expansion measurement system is explained, and the results of the measurements of the temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient in the longitudinal and the diametral (transverse) directions of several carbon fibers from room temperature to 800 °C are given.
