Description

The purpose of this paper is to examine the method and the effect of suppressing the gloss of metal leaf to describe metal leaf from a different perspective than “decoration”. In the method of suppressing the gloss of metal leaf, I focused on three points that “urahaku”, “application of paint to metal leaf”, “the method of roughening the surface of metal leaf”. In three methods, it was suggested that not only weaken the metal texture by suppressing the gloss of the metal leaf, but also be recognized metal leaf as color. Further, it turns out that it leads to the expression of the color of the motif which is not related to the metal material and the shining motif, and the mathiere on the screen by suppressing the gloss of the metal leaf and making use of the color of gold and silver etc. Also, through this paper, it was presented the method has been spreaded that not just making the most of gloss of metal leaf, but also making the color and mathiere by suppressing the gloss of metal leaf in Japanese-Style Painting and Japanese Painting before modern times.
