Abstract

The City and Country School in New York City, founded by Caroline Pratt, shares some of its philosophy at public schools and has a history of developing as a study of artistic practice. Pratt’s view of education, which emphasizes “learning centered on art experience”, is different from general art education, but is common in the point of aiming at art as a general education. The collaboration with public schools started in 1935 as the “After Program” was later transferred to Bank Street College, where theoretical studies and historical considerations have been made. However, due to the changes in American school education since the 1950s, the collaboration between C&C and public schools based on “art experience” is forced to change from their respective positions. In this paper, I tried to clarify these changes with a focus on changes in consciousness toward “art experience”.
