Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of an art appreciation lesson that intended to link from actual understanding of expression style to a deeper interpretation of the works of appreciation. There, I tried to figure them out from junior high school student’s own considerations how artists trying to establish new expression styles that were influenced by works and artists who existed in the past. Specifically, I set Picasso’s “The weeping woman” as a mainly appreciating work, and Cezanne’s “Still life with basket” as a comparative work. I focused on understanding the expression style of Cubism, and developed classes focusing on dialogue between a teacher and about 140 third year students of junior high school. As a result, the art appreciation lesson demonstrated that they have educational potential. There, by raising questions about Picasso’s way of expression, and make a class focused on finding an unnatural part of Cezanne’s “Still life with basket”, the junior high school students showed their own understandings of the expression style of Cubism. They were also able to feel the goodness of Picasso’s “The weeping woman” more deeply.
