Abstract

When determining the tear evaporation rate from measured ocular surface temperature, it is necessary to estimate the temperature distribution inside the eyeball properly. Tan et al. have proposed a method assuming that the temperature field inside the eyeball is steady, and ignoring the heat capacity of the eye and the warming effect of blinking. In order to examine the validity of the assumption, we calculated the temperature distribution inside the eyeball and the tear evaporation rate using the transient heat conduction model of the eyeball considering blinking to compare with the tear evaporation rate estimated under the assumption of steady state. As a result, we revealed that the assumption caused a non-negligible error; it underestimated the evaporation rate and could not reproduce its decreasing tendency after blinking. However, it was suggested that the time-average evaporation rate could be estimated without unsteady-state analysis by considering the influence of the blinking properly.
