Abstract

Three-spot righteye flounder, Samariscus triocellatus Woods, 1960, is first recorded from Shikoku Island, Japan, based on a single specimen (60.0 mm standard length) collected near Kashiwa-jima Island, southwest of Kochi Prefecture. We provide its description and comment on a relevant year of the original description of the species: i.e., a brief description with a key of S. triocellatus Woods, 1960 was cited from a full description of a draft manuscript of S. triocellatus Woods, 1966 by the same author. According to the Articles 10.1, 11, 13, and 15.1 in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), both are available names of this species, and the former is a senior synonym of the latter (the principle of priority). Thus, the former is appropriate to use as the valid name until someone activates the plenary power of the ICZN committee to change its status (Article 82.2.1 in ICZN).
