Description

Blood gas and electrolyte analysis has been widely accepted as the essential measurement for optimal patient care in the operating room and intensive care unit. However, commercially available heparinized syringe contains as large amount of heparin as adequate for anti-coagulation of 100 ml blood. We tested the clinical feasibility of the syringe with smaller amount of heparin for such measurement. The significant difference was found in Na, K, and Ca^<++> concentrations, compared with the results with larger amount of heaprin. We conclude that the syringe with smaller amount of heparin is suitable for the more accurate measurement of blood gas and electrolyte.
