Description

Nakanishi Asami and Inagaki Yoshiyuki: Estimation of leaf biomass and leaf longevity of hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa Endlicher) in the suburban secondary forest in Kyoto, Japan We estimated the leaf biomass of hinoki cypress stands in Kyoto by using a new method (AB equation) calculated from tree height (H), crown base height (HB), and diameter at breast height (DBH). A previous study had estimated leaf biomass in this forest by using only H and DBH. Leaf biomass was calculated for three different positions along a slope by using the AB equation (WLAB) and the former equation (WLDH). Because the former equation was obtained from felled trees less than 20.5 cm in DBH, the trees were classified into two groups. WLAB and WLDH for trees less than 20.5 cm in DBH were similar across the three sites along the slope, but for trees larger than 20.5 cm in DBH there were greater differences between the two sets of leaf biomass values. At the upper slope position the trees had a greater HB and WLDH was larger than WLAB, whereas at the middle slope position the trees had a smaller HB and WLDH was smaller than WLAB. These results suggest that the AB equation is more suitable for estimating leaf biomass because it can reflect changes in HB. WLAB of all trees at the upper, middle, and lower slope positions was 14.1, 16.4, and 15.3 Mg ha-1, respectively, whereas WLDH was 17.1, 15.1, and 16.2 Mg ha-1, respectively. Leaf longevity calculated by dividing WLAB by annual leaf-fall mass ranged from 5.1 to 6.8 years and increased upslope.
