Visual Strategy during Coincident Timing Tasks for a Moving Target

Abstract
<p>In ball sports, players often move their gaze by combining eye and head movements. In this study, this combination of eye and head movements is defined as “visual strategy”. Thirteen female university students participated in this study and coincident timing accuracy was measured by manually pressing a button coinciding with the arrival of a ball. In the experiment, the participants looked at the ball from two different angles of 90 degrees (lateral) and 0 degrees (frontal) relative to the moving direction of the ball. Ball speeds were also set at two different speeds : Slow and Fast. Eye movements were recorded at a sampling rate of 25 Hz during a coincident timing task. It is thought to be important to select and execute the optimal visual strategy in order to carry out accurate coincidence timing. The results showed that the coincident timing accuracy for the 90 degrees condition was significantly higher than that for the 0 degrees condition. It was also revealed that at the 90 degrees condition, the subjects changed their visual strategies according to the speed of the ball.</p>
