Description

Biologically treated wastewater still has earthy and musty odor, possibly caused by 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (2,4,6-TCA). A gas chromatography - olfactometry analysis detected the presence of odorous constituents such as 2-MIB, geosmin, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine and other unidentified compounds. The monitoring for more than 24 treatment plants showed that the concentration of 2,4,6-TCA in treated wastewater had a positive correlation with odor intensity. A labo-scale activated sludge reactor simulating a case of off-gas treatment by sodium hypochlorite showed the production of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, which is a precursor of 2,4,6-trichloroanisole.
