Abstract

The impacts of Moriyama Dike opening on water quality in the Honjo area, were evaluated through a series of statistical analyses, based on monthly survey data (collected between 2004 and 2014). The Mann-Whitney U-test was performed for 5 years, to evaluate the salinity of the Honjo area before and after the Moriyama Dike opening. The results indicate that the bottom salinity rose after the dike opening. Moreover, the bottom water layer in the southwestern part of the Honjo area became anoxic, while total nitrogen and total phosphorus increased significantly. The progressive oxygen depletion process in the bottom water layercaused by the opening of the Moriyama Dike, was considered to increasethe release of nitrogen and phosphorus from the sediments.
