The aim of the study is to determine how researchers in the humanities publish and use literature. <br> For this purpose 222 Japanese journal articles in the field of English and American literature published from 1985 to 1989 are collected and counted according to type of journal. All references cited in these articles were also analyzed according to type of publication (books/journals, domestic/foreign). <br> Researchers in the field of English and American literary studies publish their papers mainly in college bulletins. They cite many English books, but a much smaller number of Japanese books. Citations of journal articles whether English or Japanese are fewer still. Although they publish in college bulletins they seldom cite papers written by others in college bulletins. These results support the notion that the methodology and information transfer in humanistic scholarship are distinctly different from those in sciences and social sciences.
