Description

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mainly causes respiratory infections, however, there are increasing reports of neurological manifestations. I present here a comprehensive review of encephalitis/encephalopathy as neurological complications of COVID-19. The virus has been detected only scarcely in cerebrospinal fluid, there is accumulating evidence that CNS damage could be caused as para-infectious immune-mediated disease and neurological complications of the systemic effects of COVID-19, including acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and acute necrotizing encephalopathy. In COVID-19 cases with consciousness disturbance or psychological symptoms, it is necessary to evaluate clinical examination and therapeutic strategy on the assumption of the existence of encephalitis/encephalopathy associated COVID-19.
