Abstract

application/pdf

The aim of this study is to reveal the trend of children’s literature in Okinawa on the basis of analysis of the historical sources. Focusing on the trend which leads to the postwar period of Okinawa on the background of prewar cultural exchanges between Taiwan and the Yaeyama region, this study analyzes the history and characteristics of works written by Sanefu Koto in children’s literature. Koto contributed greatly to the postwar cultural renaissance in Yaeyama. He was a teacher of a public school in Taiwan under the Japanese rule at the time, and he wrote many stories set in his hometown, Yaeyama, after the war ended. His works are under the influence of the tradition of Japanese juvenile literature, which was popular in Taiwan at that time, and reflect his experience as a teacher.
