It is neccessary for homes for the aging to break away from the institution-centered orientation of the business perspective, sometimes referred to as "total institution". Furthermore, homes for the aging must not succumb to the false belief that the facility is composed of para-families. Rather, the goal should be the formation of a true community. Community care in homes for the aging is an approach in contrast to shutting the elderly away in institutional care. It is argued here that the aging should be treated in a community. Community care is practiced with collabaration between the care staff, the home residents and the local community. Care giving staff must behave as mutually participating members of the community, for if they do not do so the social needs of the aging residents cannnot be met.
