This article is largely a sequel to the author’s previous study of“The Age of‘Spiritual Revolution’―A Comparative Study of Socrates,Confucius,Buddha and Jesus,Part I”, Journal for the Comparative Study of Civilizations,No.13, 2008, which discussed Socrates’“Spiritual Revolution”in Greece. It begins with an analysis of the differences between the social structures of the Greek polis (πÓ λιs) and the Chinese city-states in the period of the Shang and Chou dynasties. It then proceeds to make clear the shifts in the central norm of society from Ti (帝) and T’ien (天) to Tao (道). This is essentially the path from mythology to philosophy in China. After having characterized the Spring and Autumn period as a turning point of Chinese history, the focus shifts to the four essential points of Confucius’“Spiritual Revolution”in the history of Chinese thought, especially emphasizing Confucius’assertion of the importance of Ren (仁) as a basis of Li (礼)―the traditional core of Chinese culture. Finally, the thought of Confucius and that of Socrates are compared.
