Description

Eight plots growing with different stand densities (4,000-45,000 trees/ha) in a young forest of Castanopsis cuspidata located near Kumamoto City were investigated for tree size and forest biomass at 4 times during a period of 7 years as well as for litter fall amount for a period of 4 years. The leaf fall of this species occurred mainly in late spring just after the new leaves developed and the annual amount of leaf fall was about half of the leaf biomass of the stand. The net production was estimated as the sum of biomass increment and litter fall. The mean annual net production in all plots was estimated to be 16.8±0.9 t/ha/yr for a period of 6 years without clear differences among plots. Fairly good relationships were observed on the competition-density effect, yield-density effect and natural thinning with time.
