Description

Recently, CDI (Children's Depression Inventory; Kovacs, M. 1981) has been often used to assess childhood depression, which is known as having highly reliability and validity of some aspects. However, CDI have not examined its construct validity in Japan (Japanese version). In study 1,according to theoretical correlarions between childhood depression and related conceptions-Percieved competence, sence of identity, anxiety, ego-strength, lonliness, helplessness, self-concept and social-supports-, construct validity of CDI was examined by four investigations. Subjects were 1842 students in elementary school, junior-high school and high school (ranged from 7 to 18 years old). Results supported the theoretical correlations between CDI and other scales assessing related conceptions as a whole, but CDI showed too highly correlation coefficients with several scales. In conclusion, we think that CDI has construct validity to some extent, but it had better be regarded as general mental health rather than childhood depression. Therefore, we might be allowed to use CDI to understand students' mental health. In study 2,we attempted to apply CDI to educational consultatios. We explained the results of our previous investigations to teachers, and discussed about students who had obtained more than cutoff score (22), especially how to comprehend students' daily behaviors and care of students' mentalities. After 8 months, we reinvestigated at an elementary school using CDI, we could find out that CDI score significantly dropped (p<.01), this result might indicate effectiveness on educational consultations using CDI to grasp and facilitate students' mental health.
