Abstract

In 1969, Norbert Elias' "Über den Prozess der Zivilisation(The Civilizing Process)" was republished in Germany. It was trigger to acknowledge and revaluate the works of Elias. In the "Introduction" that was freshly written at this time, Elias said that 'The discussion of this image of man serves in the first place to improve understanding of the ensuing study of the civilizing process'. This paper mean to be a basic research to determine the position and substance of the problem of human-images in the works of Elias. I insist on following things in this paper. The problem of human-image, that one named 'homo clausus (closed person)', was not considered by Elias after the completion of "The Civilizing Process'. This was the problem with that Elias has been got from the beginning of his research, and was the clue to create his particular social image as showed in "The Court Society” and "The Civilizing Process". Through these two works, Elias set up the concept of 'homines aperti (open people)' as the base of his social image. Key concepts are "homo clausus (closed person)"and "homines aperti (open people)", Elias' concepts about human-images. Though main texts discussed in this paper are "The Court Society" and "The Civilizing Process", for Elias the problem of Human-Images has been a fundamental one, so we need to refer to others of his works as well.
