Abstract

Glendonite is a calcite (CaCO3) pseudomorph after ikaite (CaCO3・6H2O) and frequently surrounded by calcareous concretion (glendonite concretion). Formation process of glendonite concretion has not been understood completely. In this study, glendonite concretions found in Eocene Poronai Formation were investigated from geological and geochemical points of view. Carbon isotope shows that carbon in ikaite and concretion was derived by decomposition of organism. Microscopic structure revealed that concretion was formed after ikaite crystal formation and before ikaite dehydration. This results are expected to contribute for generalize of concretion formation mechanism.
