With EE (environmental education) and ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) being introduced into an increasing number of schools worldwide, it is important to consider how such environmentally-focused education should be implemented in the years to come. With this in mind, the author conducted a case study of EE and ESD in two Korean elementary schools. In theory, EE and ESD share common perspectives and contents; however, it was found in this study that ESD is broader in scope than EE. The author considers that EE and ESD should be seen as separate educational concepts. The analysis of the case studies found that the schools' environmental education was mainly focused on the ecology of natural systems, with the ESD viewpoints and content included in the lessons. On the other hand, the extent to which EE is practiced varies considerably between schools. The present situation is one of uncertainty as to the position EE should occupy within the curriculum, a situation that can easily lead to confusion. For this reason, it is important for there to be a reorganization of EE in order to promote its dissemination and to facilitate the practice of ESD. The findings from the present study indicate two main avenues for future research: illuminating the influence that EE and ESD have on schools and their pupils, and comparing the implementation of EE and ESD in different countries.
