Abstract

This paper focuses on the spin-out and business development of two local electric lamp companies, SKY and AFC Co., Limited, which were established in 2000 in Akita, Japan. Previous studies for the Japanese electric lamp industry examined the following topics: (1) the structure and development of the export electric lamp industry mainly during the period of high economic growth in the 1950-60s, (2) the business development of electric lamp companies which transferred production from Tokyo to Akita in the 1960s, and (3) the new model of LED business by the local companies which entered the electric lamp industry from different industries. In this paper, using the oral history technique based on an interview with the owner-manager, we clarified the following things: [1] one employee of the electric lamp company located in Akita spun out and established new companies, and [2] the spun-out company worked on securing production, technology, and employment.
