Description
It is not widely known that professional Japanese entertainers gave kabuki, noh, and bunraku performances in Manchuria during the colonial period that extended from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. Based on an analysis of articles drawn from daily and specialty newspapers published in Dalian, my paper, examines how these performances were received by Japanese residents in the region and attempts to determine whether they were interested in music and the performing arts as an area of private study. I focus on 1)the manner of promoting and reporting each performance tour; 2)the type of venue and performer; and 3)the level of public interest in watching and studying the performing arts.
