Fuzan Shogyo Gakko (Fuzan [Pusan] Commerce School ; later Fuzan Daiichi Shogyo Gakko) was established in April, 1906. The school, the first Japanese middle school abroad, was renowned not only for its history but for its quality education in the field of commerce. This study aims at clarifying the factors that made possible the school's top quality education program. The prominence of Fuzan Daiichi Shogyo Gakko is demonstrated by the fact that all of its principals were considerably experienced and regarded as the top figures in the field of commercial education (to put it another way, no one was eligible to become the principal of this particular school without the experience of holding the principal position in other schools). It should be also pointed out that many of its faculty members later went on to become principals in other schools, which was not very common for a school located outside Keijo (Seoul). Despite the small amount of data available on its graduates' enrollment in higher educational institutions and careers, their memoirs and words demonstrate that their successful achievements, both in academic and other careers, were a source of pride for the school.
