Abstract

Heavy rainfall is one of the important factors affecting forest denudation. The purposes of this paper is to study the intensity and distribution of heavy rainfall, and to estimate their causes. We chose the Miyazaki Forest of Kyushu University, which is located at the central part of Kyushu District as our study area, and made observations from 1976 to 1982. The results are as follows: (1) Daily precipitation at Okawachi in the Miyazaki Forest is the most of all the stations in Kyushu District. But, its hourly precipitation is less. (2) The amount of precipitation at No. 1(in Fig. 2) is always more than the areal precipitation in the Okawachi watershed. (3) The amount of precipitation at No. 5 and No. 6 (in Fig. 2) is always less than the areal precipitation in the Okawachi watershed. (4) Precipitation-catch variations are influenced by the topography and wind direction at 850 mb level (1500 m height).
