Description

Surveys on avian fauna were carried out in two types of habitat, i. e. mountain forest with conifer plantation or broad leaved trees, and hill forest adjacent to cultivated fields, in Kasuya Forest of Kyushu University. The sum total of 69 species of birds including 27 winter visitors, 21 residents, 12 summer visitors and 9 transients were recorded in the study areas. In the mountain forests the dominant species were Zosterops japonica and Hypsipetes amaurotis in summer and Turdus naumanni or Zosterops japonica in winter. Having various types of vegetation, Kasuya Forest is considered to be very important as a breeding and feeding site and also as a resting place for wild birds.
