Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between studies into Japanese classic literature and disability history research. In it, we discuss the use and meaning of kyo (狂) “mad/madness”. We see two uses of “madness” in Japanese literature. One is the “madness” seen in terms such as kyogen (狂言) and kyoken (狂狷), and then there is the sort of “madness” found with fukyo (風狂) “insanity” and kyoki (狂気) “insanity/madness”. The final form of madness, kyoki, has often been associated with “creation” or “creativity”, but in order to pursue this line of study in greater depth, further research into biographical studies of Japanese literature is needed.
