Description
This paper presents a method for the determination of trace amounts of aliphatic aldehydes on thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) plates by diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared (DRIFT) spectrometry. 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) was used as a reagent for preparing derivatives of aldehydes and the DNP-hydrazones which were formed could be separated by TLC. After derivatives had been developed with benzene-hexane (2 : 1) solvent system on silicagel plates, qualitative analyses were done by R_ƒ values. Again they were developed with benzene-ethyl acetate (1 : 5) solvent system for concentrating the spread spots at the solvent front. Concentrated spots were scrached off the plate and mixed with pottasium bromide powder. DRIFT was used for measuring the infrared spectra of sample powder. All DRIFT spectra were shown in Kubelka-Munk format by using the FTIR data system. Calibration curve of aliphatic aldehyde was linear in the concentration between 4.3ppm and 42ppm.
