Description

In this study, we examined the quantitative and qualitative differences of communication between CMC and face-to-face, the effects of social skills on communication features, and the differences of impressions of other participants. Therefore, we assigned same subject group (dyad or triad, same sex) to two conditions, CMC and face-to-face, and investigated the different effects of communication media between above conditions. The results suggested that social skills did not affect the verbal productivity in the CMC condition, there was no difference in the amount of word between CMC and face-to-face, and subjects in the face-to-face condition perceived other participants more friendly, active, and light-minded than those in the CMC condition. Also, subjects tended to reply shortly when assigned to the face-to-face condition, while they tended to reply self-disclosure related messages when assigned to the CMC condition.
