Description
In Yap there are three concepts of "tradition," that is, yalen yu Wa'ab, yalen ni kakrom and ya'an yu Wa'ab. Yalen yu Wa'ab, or "the way of the people of Yap," is the concept objectified through comparison with the ways of other regions. Yalen ni Kakrom, or "the way of the past," is the concept objectified through comparison with the way of nowadays. These concepts include the word "yalen" meaning "the way" and connote social relationship based on family, sex and village. On the other hand, ya'an yu Wa'ab or "the style of the people of Yap" doesn't include the word yalen and has no connotation about social relationship. Much of the previous research on tradition was focused almost exclusively on the problem of tradition as at the level of political discourses, thus overlooking the "tradition" talked and practiced in everyday life. To understand historical dynamics and experiences in Oceania, research and analysis of the concepts of "tradition" in everyday life should be done more positively.
