Abstract

In the new government teaching guidelines for mathematics and science introduced in April 2012, the keyword, “mathematical activity” was changed from a category of educational goals to educational contents. At present, several conceptually similar technical terms are in use, such as “mathematization,” “mathematical experiment,” “problem solving,” and “mathematics utilization.” However, no great diff erence exists regarding the meaning and application of these terms. In this paper, using the well-known and systematized term “mathematical modeling” to unify all the previous terms, we describe the study of statistics, which has become a compulsory course in the new curriculum. We anticipate that diffi culties will arise in eff ectively implementing the statistics classes because of the lack of experience in many schools. Therefore, we propose introducing tentative lessons from previously taught “data analysis” courses, which are also examples of “mathematical activity” and “statistical modeling.” Furthermore, these lessons could become a proposal for the development of teaching materials in cooperation with high schools and colleges.
