The author considered fundamentally about the following problems: viz the relation between the combustion of cokes and the blast; the relation between the charging materials and supplemental cokes; the falling condition of the charges; the physical meaning of the bed cokes, etc. And the author urges the consideration for the other point of view on the coke ratio, and the chemical reaction of the furnace in order to operate the cupola reasonably.

金属の溶解精錬に用いる炉としては一般的に鍋型(Pan)と筒型(Cylinder)とに大別出来る。茲で取り挙げるキュポラは筒型の代表的なもので，材料と共に燃料であるコークス更には造滓剤を一緒に投入して製錬するところに特色がある。即ち燃料と材料の直接接触と云うことであり，それが重力による自然降下の間に反応を起す訳であって，電気炉が反応平衡を問題とし，キュポラが反応速度を問題とすると云われる所以も茲にある。このキュポラの特性を本質的に考究して，操業に関する従来の一般的考え方に対して多少の批判考察を加えたいと思う。
