Description

This paper illustrates what conversation analysis (CA) can offer to the study of language and culture through discussing an ethnomethod to "eat a doughnut while keeping the hole" from a CA perspective. The analysis of conversations revealed that explicit and implicit silences are made relevant after the occurrence of a first pair part of an adjacency pair. Both silences are normatively attributed some meaning because of our cultural understanding; however, a type of response that invalidates the responsibility to answer the question's propositional content can leave a (implicit) silence as it is. CA can explicate the knowledge we culturally share and the competence we use the knowledge in/through communication.
