Description

Many previous studies have investigated a body shape as a unidimensional construct that ranges fromthinness to fatness. The present study investigated the multidimensionality of the perceptual and ideal body shapes as well as their relationships to body satisfaction and outcome expectancy after the attainment of an ideal body shape(OE-IB). A sample of 405 women (mean age = 29.7, SD= 5.75, range: 20-39) completed an online questionnaire assessing the current and ideal body shapes, body satisfaction, and OE-IB. Results indicated that both current and ideal body shapes were composed of five dimensions ("Skinniness," "Firmness," "Plumpness," "bust size," and "Tallness"), and the ideal body shape was rather narrowly defined. Furthermore, the difference in the "Firmness" dimension between the perceptual and ideal body shapes was positively correlated with body dissatisfaction and certain OE-IB.
