Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, New Zealand and Costa Rica are in circum-Pacific mobile belts, while South Korea and Poland are in stable continent. These regions have 237 rivers with alluvial fans of larger than 2 km2 among 1,190 drainage basins of areas larger than 100 km2 (larger than 200 km2 in Poland). By use of discriminant analysis, the dominant factors for the distribution of alluvial fan were determined to be the sedimentary environment, climatic type, relative relief indicating uplift rate among nine factors, that is drainage basin area, intermontane basin area, relief ratio, geology of drainage basin, existence of volcano, climatic type, sedimentary environment, relative relief, and existence of fault.
