仙島語は1985 年に中国において新しく発見された言語であり，使用人口の少ない，危機に瀕している言語でもある。仙島語の機能の衰退をもたらした原因がいろいろと挙げられるが，そのうちのエスニックグループの分裂が主要な原因と考えられている。わずか半世紀の間に一部の仙島人が完全にかつての母語を失い，中国語の共通語を使用するようになった。また，一部の人が景颇語を主要言語にし，母語を第二言語として兼用している。　仙島語の危機に向かったプロセスは「言語の接触，言語兼用，言語転用」の過程が見られた。二回の集団移動は言語転用を加速してしまった。仙島語の危機状態は急速頻危型である。

The Xiandao language is one of the newly discovered minoritylanguages in China. It has very few speakers, and therefore canbe considered as a language in danger of extinction. We have chosenXiandao as a case study of an endangered language, mainly becausethe causes of the decline and disappearance of the Xiandao languageare various, but ethnic group separation is the most important factor.Only fifty years ago, some Xiandao people lost their native languageand came to use Chinese instead; others use the Jingpo language astheir main language, while their native language plays a secondaryrole. The endangered language Xiandao experiences language contact→bilingualism→language shift. The two movements accelerate languageshift. The Xiandao language belongs to the extremely endangeredtype.
