Statistical analysis of B. LEAGUE and NBA: Focusing on Four Factors of Basketball

Correlations between the four factors of basketball (effective field goal percentage, offensive rebounding percentage, turnover percentage, and free throw rate) and net ratings were investigated using data from professional basketball teams in Japan and North America. Statistical data of Japanese teams were collected from 60 games played by 18 B1 teams of the B. LEAGUE in the 2016-2017 season and data of North American teams were collected from 82 games played by 30 NBA teams in the same season. The results indicated (1) a strong positive correlation between effective field goal percentage and net rating in both B. LEAGUE and NBA teams. (2) In B. LEAGUE teams, a relatively strong correlation was shown between offensive rebounding percentage and net rating. (3) A relatively strong negative correlation was shown between turnover percentage and the net rating in B. LEAGUE teams, whereas a weak negative correlation was shown in NBA teams. (4) There were no correlations between free throw rate and net rating in either B. LEAGUE or NBA teams.
