This paper investigates the plausibility of the hypothesis that each Thai government’s stance toward income redistribution influenced the structure of household debt in the 2000’s. Under the Thaksin administration (2001-2006), rural villages and low-income earners were favored in order to reduce regional and income differences. During the political instability that followed the collapse of the administration in September, 2006, the favoritism enjoyed by these households was more or less reversed. In tandem with the transition in this economic policy, the volume of debt and the debt-income ratio of households classified as low-income, i.e. farm workers and north/northeastern residents, increased in the early 2000's, then decreased after Thaksin’s administration’s fall relative to nationwide averages. However, it would be difficult to maintain that this trend predominated in all households, because the outstanding debt held by low-income households was minuscule compared to that of middle- and high-income households. There is still room for further research into these issues.
