The purpose of this article is to prepare a basis for reconsideration about what the agglomeration and clustering of the automotive industry means for local companies and the regional and local economies in North Kyushu. There are more than twenty articles dealing with this topic. But none show any clear idea of the area of agglomeration. The present author sheds light on the areal concept of this industrial agglomeration and clustering from the viewpoint of economic geography, focusing on the territory of Oita prefecture and the spatial distribution of suppliers to Daihatsu Kyushu Inc., which is located in the northernmost part of the territory of Oita prefecture. On the basis of analyses of a few different databases of automotive parts suppliers in Kyushu, especially in the territory of Oita prefecture, and interviews with managers of several suppliers and automotive makers in Kyushu, it is clear that the area of agglomeration and clustering stretches beyond any of the local governments' territories and even beyond Kyushu itself. Nevertheless, it is also apparent that the number of automotive parts suppliers has increased since around 2004 in the northernmost part of Oita prefecture's territory. This area of agglomeration is an extension of the existing area of agglomeration of the automotive industry, which is centered on Nissan Motor Kyushu Inc. within Fukuoka prefecture's territory. Most of the existing articles on the automotive industry in Kyushu have focused on the procurement ratio of parts within Kyushu by the automotive makers. We should, however, reconsider the significance of industrial agglomeration and clustering for local companies as well as for the regional and local territorial economies. The focal point is the innovation by and evolution of local companies. The present article provides a basis for this research theme for economic geography.
