Description

To Toyoshi Kenkyu, Vol. 4, 1940, the present author contributed an article enditled "On the Salary of the Government Officilas under the Han Dsnasty." In that article he said that the Han Government officials were paid 70 per cent in coin and the rest in kind in spite of the edict of 50 A.D. which provides payment in coin and kind helf and half, and that throughout the Han period the 70-30 per cent payment was a rule. Recently in his articles on the Han measures appeared in HJAS, 1950, and Kuo-hsueh-chi-k'an, Mr. Yang Lien-Sheng attacked the present author's view. And Mr. Lao Kan also contributed an article on the same subject to Ta-lu-tsa-chih, I-II, 1950 The present author tries to criticize the views of these two Chinese authors, and develops his own view in the light of some passages in the Biography of Ts'ao-man (曹瞞), which are quoted in Chiu-chang-suan-shu (九章算術) and in a note in Vol. 1 of the Wei Annals (魏志). The author holds that his view still holds good.
