Abstract

Accuracy and reliability of blood pressure values were evaluated with cuff-oscillometric semiautomatic device (OMRON HEM 401C) for casual blood pressure measurement to compare with the values obtained by the auscultatory method using a standard mercury sphygmomanometer. Both systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) values measured by the device (OM-HEM) coincided well with those measured by the auscultatory method using a sphygmomanometer. SBP and DBP values by OM-HEM were not insignificantly different with than those by auscultatory method (SBP 125.8+-16.9 mmHg vs, 125.0+-16.5 mmHg ; DBP : 78.2+-12.5 mmHg vs. 77.6+-13.9 mmHg). The blood pressure values measured by the auscultatory method were highly significantly correlated with those measured by OM-HEM in both SBP (r=0.975) and DBP (r=0.940). Factors influencing the difference between the value obtained from the auscultatory method and that measured by OM-HEM were found to be the levels of SBP and DBP, sex, arm circumference, age and pulse rate by means of multivariate regression analysis. The difference in DBP was affected more obviously by the 6 variables above mentioned than that in SBP, suggesting that DBP should be measured carefully. In summary, the cuff-oscillometric semiautomatic device (OMRON HEM 401C) is useful for the epidemiologic survey and the clinical use including home blood pressure measurement because of its simplicity and cheapness.
