Abstract

The aim of this article is to investigate the counseling function of Okinawan shaman "Yuta". Two interviews conducted by shamans are here in reported and are discussed from the viewpoint of comparisons with counseling interviews based on clinical psychology. Some of the findins were as follows; (1)The style of developing a rapport is unique, i. e. rapport is nurtured by guessing the facts related to the client by supernatural ways. (2)The interview is strongly led by the shaman. (3)The meaning of the client's distress is interpreted by relating it to the context of the lack of taking care of spirits of the client's ancestors. Finally. (4)the shaman concretely advises the client on how to overcome the distress based on the above mentioned context.
