Abstract

This article reports part of the fieldwork which I carried out on the mahalla system in the Uighur community in China and attempts to give the system some careful consideration. The mahalla is a traditional social unit peculiar to the Uighur community. It is a place where the children start to learn by experience to be good members of the society. The mahalla drills the children in developing sociability such as associating with other people, and in so doing they learn,in the society, how to act properly and to behave themselves. The point is that such learning is fostered by children of different ages playing on friendly terms.
