This article reconsiders the concept of horme (ορμη)in the Corpus Aristotelicum. The relevant four words, i. e. ορμη, ορμαω, ορμητιχοζ, and ορμητιωζ, tend to be taken, at least in some usage, to mean a particular kind of mental phenomena, and are often translated as (e.g.) impulse, impetus, impel (be impelled), impulsive(ly), and the like; their characteristics are supposed to be outburst, suddenness of occurrence, eagerness, rush, irrationality, or difficulty of control. The author examines all of the 154 examples of these four words in the Corpus Aristotelicum, to show the incorrectness of this kind of interpretation. In these examples, (1) the four words basically mean some kind of movement, or its start; (2) which kinds of characteristics of movement are focused on depends on the context, not on the sense of those words; (3) in many of these examples, the movements (or their start) are not mental or internal events; and importantly, (4) even in the cases where they refer to some mental phenomena, those four words mean motive or motivation in general. There are no cases in which they have some impulsive implication.
