Abstract

This study was designed to examine effects of covering the seed-bed with some materials on the early germination rate of orchardgrass(Dg) and Broadleaf dock(Ro) for the control of Ro as weed and to improve Dg germination in the direct drilling. In Experiment 1, the early germination rate of Dg and Ro was measured for 21 days after sowing in the seed-bed covered with three different materials (volcanic ash soil, compost, and commercial clay) at three different thickness (0, 0.5, 1.0cm).The early germination rate of Dg and Ro was significantly different among the materials and the covering thickness. As the covering thickness increased, the early germination rate of Dg declined but showed more than 17.5% at 1.0cm thick-ness in volcanic ash soil. However, that of Ro were shown 0% at both 0.5and 1.0cm thickness in volcanic ash soil. In Experiment 2, effects of mixing volcanic ash soil and compost covering the seed-bed at three different thickness(volcanic ash soil:0, 0.5, 1.0cm and compost:0.5, 1.0, 1.5cm) on the early germination rate of Dg and Ro were examined for 21 days after sowing. The germination rate was suppressed to 0% for Ro, but was still kept at 45% for Dg at 0.5cm thickness of both volcanic ash soil and compost. The result from this study suggested that covering the seed-bed with a mixture of volcanic ash soil and compost controlled the early germination of Ro as weed by intercepting light reaching Ro seeds that are light germinator, resulting in keeping the Dg germination rate as high as possible. The present method would be effective to improve the direct drilling technology in terms of weed control.
