Abstract

In inland rural China, recent economic development and penetration of cash economy have rapidly been changing social and material life of villagers. Keeping such a situation in mind, this paper aims to examine how some of social traditions have been changed and how others persist, by giving a detailed description of a marriage and accompanied wedding ceremony observed in a village(Beisong-Ta)located in Loess Plateau(Ansai Prefecture, Shanxi). As a result, while rapid penetration of market economy has been making recent marriage more and more costly so that many indebted farmers are pushed to work outside villages, it is observed that basic social relationship such as reciprocal help among villagers as well as patrilineal/patrilocal marriage tradition including attached customs such as son preference is still held on.
