Abstract

I discovered 96 letters written by Ouyang Xiu of the Northern Song dynasty of China, of which the existence was not known at all. Four out of 96 newly found letters correspond to the letters contained in the popular edition of Ouyang Xiu. In this paper, I bring out some features of these four letters through comparing the two different editions of the collected works of Ouyang Xiu in which the letters are contained. As a result, it turned out that the texts are deliberately elaborated in the newly discovered version. The fact that newly found letters are specified with the recipients' names unveils that these are the letters which Ouyang Xiu really sent to the addressees. Conversely, the letters contained in the popular edition are the manuscripts stored in Ouyang Xiu's home. This discovery may provide a clue to resolving how the compilers of the collected works compiled the correspondence.
