Description
This research discusses how grammatical Helvetism has been treated in actual written texts in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, especially in daily texts, literature texts, and journalistic texts, in comparison with lexical Helvetism, to make clear the language norm in the standard variety of High German in Switzerland. The grammatical uniqueness of Helvetism has rarely been dealt with in the German dictionaries published in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Moreover, since it is difficult to determine a grammatical difference between the dialect (Swiss German) and the standard variants, grammatical Helvetism is less likely to be recognized as a standard variety than lexical Helvetism. Therefore, some grammatical features of Helvetisms are often considered to be wrong usages. For instance, according to some orthographical dictionaries and grammars based on High German, grammatical Helvetism is regarded as a deviation from the standard variants, particularly of the northern areas of Germany. In Section 2, the diglossic situation of Swiss German and a standard variety of Swiss High German is overviewed, and issues on Swiss High German are raised. In Section 3, the definition of Swiss High German is examined based on the previous studies. The description and classification of Helvetisms are investigated with the dictionaries. Section 4 applies to the classification of Helvetisms introduced in Section 3 to examine the examples from Schweizer Text Korpus (CHTK) according to the type of texts. Based on the results of this corpus research, Chapter 5 discusses the way to compile the dictionaries in the German-speaking part of Switzerland.
